Chapter 8: Boundaries and Late-Night Warnings
(Mixed POV: Ishita Sharma | Kabir Rathod)
The morning sun filtered softly through the curtains of Ishita's apartment, casting a warm glow over the dining table. A small plate of poached eggs, whole wheat toast, and fresh fruits sat neatly arranged before her. She picked up her fork, taking a slow bite, savoring the calm before the chaos of hospital rounds began. For once, the quiet morning felt almost peaceful.
Finishing her breakfast, she decided to share the moment with Kabir. Picking up her phone, she snapped a quick photo of her plate, now empty except for a few crumbs, and sent it to him.
WhatsApp Chat:
Ishita: "Breakfast done. Healthy and on time. 😌"
Kabir: "Did you eat everything? Or skipped something?"
Ishita: "Everything. Don't worry, I followed your rules. 😉"
Kabir: "Good. Make sure you drink enough water too."
Ishita: "Yes, chef. 😏"
She chuckled softly at his texts, sipping a little juice from a glass. A faint scolding lingered in his words even over text, but she didn't mind. It was Kabir — protective, possessive, and utterly impossible to ignore.
The day at the hospital was hectic. Back-to-back surgeries left her exhausted, yet she carried herself with the usual precision. Between procedures, she sent him small updates, a mix of professional reports and playful messages.
WhatsApp Chat:
Ishita: "Surgery #2 complete. All stable."
Kabir: "Did you eat lunch?"
Ishita: "Yes, don't worry, I'm managing. 😌"
Kabir: "You're too careless sometimes."
Ishita: "And you worry too much. 😏"
Despite the teasing, she noticed the familiar weight of concern in his words. It was comforting, in its own way, to know that someone was watching over her — even from miles away, caught up in back-to-back meetings
By late afternoon, Ishita prepared to leave for the evening. She had agreed to join a small party with a few hospital colleagues — a chance to unwind, to let her hair down after the demanding day. As she dressed, she snapped a few pictures, sending them to Kabir.
WhatsApp Chat:
Ishita: "Ready-ish. Don't fall in love with me yet. 😏"
Kabir: "Don't forget who owns your evenings."
Ishita: "Noted, sir. 😜"
She rolled her eyes, laughing softly at his possessive tone. Kabir had no idea she would only tease him in her mind, keeping the playful fire alive without giving anything away in front of anyone.
The party was lively. Music pulsed through the club, and Ishita found herself laughing with colleagues, dancing just a little, and enjoying the rare break from the hospital's relentless schedule. Every now and then, her phone buzzed. Kabir.
WhatsApp Chat:
Kabir: "Be careful. Don't make me regret letting you go."
Ishita: "I'm careful... don't overthink. 😏"
She smiled, typing quickly before pocketing the phone. He didn't need to know the details; it was enough that he trusted her — a little.
Meanwhile, back at the Rathod office, Kabir moved through one meeting after another. Deals, contracts, hospital oversight, defense expansions — every decision carried weight, yet his mind kept drifting to Ishita. Her messages, photos, small updates — they haunted his focus in the best possible way.
He imagined her laughing, moving gracefully in her outfit, the soft curve of her smile. Every detail set a fire in his chest he refused to show anyone else. His possessiveness simmered silently, restrained but unyielding.
She's laughing with others, but she belongs to me. Always.
Hours later, Ishita returned home. She opened the door quietly, expecting only the familiar comfort of her apartment. Instead, Kabir was there — calm, composed, impeccably dressed as if he had stepped out of one of his meetings moments ago.
"You're late," she said, trying to sound casual, though fatigue and excitement softened her tone.
"I was busy," he replied evenly, dark eyes scanning her carefully. The faint curve of her lips, the way her hair fell across her shoulder, the tired slump of her shoulders — he noticed everything.
"You drank so little," he said, crossing the room with that effortless, quiet authority.
"I'm fine," she said, shrugging, though she felt the warmth in her chest at his worry.
"Not fine," he said, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Sit. Now. You need to eat."
He made her a small late-night snack — something simple, warm, just enough to settle her stomach. He fed her carefully, his hand brushing hers as he guided the spoon. She tried to protest at first.
"I'm not a child," she murmured, half-smiling, half-scolding.
"You'll eat because I said so," he replied softly, leaning closer. "And don't argue. I don't care how tired you are."
Reluctantly, she obeyed, taking the bites he offered. Every small gesture — the touch, the brush of his fingers, the dark intensity of his gaze — made her pulse quicken.
After the food, they moved to the couch. The lights dim, the city faintly glowing outside her windows. He pulled her close, letting her rest against his chest. She exhaled softly, the stress of the day melting away in his presence.
"You always take care of everything," she whispered.
"I take care of you," he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. His hand rested lightly on her shoulder, tracing idle patterns as if marking her as his own.
They talked quietly, sharing small stories from the day — her party antics, colleagues' jokes, and his subtle observations from the office. Nothing loud. Nothing public. Just them. Safe.
Eventually, sleep claimed her, and he remained awake for a few minutes, watching her rise and fall with each breath. Her phone lay on the table, forgotten, her messages paused mid-thought. He didn't need her to check in. He already knew.
Before slipping into his own rest, he sent a final message, quiet and deliberate:
Kabir: "Sleep well. Tomorrow, we start fresh — and I don't want you skipping anything."
She stirred slightly, a small smile curling on her lips, unaware that he had been watching, caring, and protecting — all in silence, all in secrecy.
No one knew. No one could ever know. And that was exactly how it should be.
