Chapter 19: The Palace Knows Before People Do

Chapter 19: The Palace Knows Before People Do

Rathod Palace had always known secrets.

Its walls had witnessed kings hiding wars, queens burying grief behind jewels, and bloodlines protected by silence stronger than any oath. Tonight, the palace stood illuminated—golden lights glowing against the Rajasthani sky—but inside, something restless stirred.

Kabir Rathod walked through the long corridor with measured steps, Ishita beside him.

She felt the shift the moment they crossed the threshold.

The air here was different. Heavy with history. With eyes that didn't watch but noticed.

"You okay?" Kabir asked quietly, fingers brushing her wrist—a question disguised as a touch.

She nodded. "I trust you."

That was the problem.

Rajmata's Gaze

Rajmata Rathod sat in the courtyard, prayer beads slipping slowly through her fingers. She looked up the moment Ishita entered, as if she had been waiting.

Their eyes met.

Something unspoken passed between them.

Rajmata rose, walked toward Ishita with a calm grace that commanded space without effort.

"You've lost weight," she said gently.

Ishita smiled politely. "Hospital schedules."

Kabir stiffened slightly.

Rajmata turned to her son. "You look injured."

Kabir replied evenly, "Old wound."

Her eyes lingered on him longer than necessary—then moved back to Ishita.

"Come," Rajmata said. "Sit with me."

Ishita hesitated.

Kabir nodded once.

She sat.

Rajmata placed a warm hand over Ishita's wrist, right where the bangles rested—the ones she had gifted at the temple.

"Some women carry storms quietly," Rajmata said, almost to herself.

"And some men bring storms wherever they go."

Ishita's breath caught.

Kabir said nothing.

Veer's World Collides (A Glimpse Only)

Veer Rathod was in the palace office wing, arguing into his phone.

"No, move the shipment to Udaipur—now," he snapped. "I don't care about the delay."

He turned—and stopped short.

A girl stood there, clutching a file, eyes wide, clearly lost.

"I—sorry," she said quickly. "I was looking for the archival wing. I'm... um... Aarohi."

Her voice softened when she realized who he was. "I'm an intern researcher. History department. The university is collaborating with the palace."

Veer frowned. "You shouldn't be here. This wing—"

"I know," she interrupted, embarrassed. "I took a wrong turn."

She was young—22, maybe 23. No fear in her eyes, only curiosity and intelligence.

Veer exhaled. "Come. I'll show you the way."

As they walked, she glanced at him. "You don't sound like a businessman."

Veer smirked. "And you don't sound like someone afraid of authority."

She smiled.

Just a moment.

Just a spark.

Enough to be remembered later.

Kavya's Silence (Another Seed)

Kavya stood on the terrace, phone in hand, pretending to scroll.

In reality, she was watching the palace grounds.

A man stood near the security post—calm, observant, posture military. Not one of theirs.

Their eyes met briefly.

He nodded politely.

She raised an eyebrow.

Interesting.

She filed the moment away. Kavya Rathod never ignored intuition.

Back to the Heart of the Storm

Dinner was quiet.

Too quiet.

Ishita felt it—the pauses, the way conversations carefully avoided her, the way Rajmata watched Kabir when she thought no one noticed.

Halfway through the meal, Ishita's nausea returned suddenly.

She excused herself gracefully.

Kabir followed a moment later, concern etched deep into his face.

"You're not okay," he said softly, once they were alone in the corridor.

She leaned against the wall, eyes closed. "Just... dizzy."

Kabir's hand hovered near her waist, not touching, respecting the space she needed.

"This isn't just stress, is it?" he asked quietly.

She opened her eyes.

"I don't know yet," she said honestly. "But I will."

Their eyes locked.

Fear flickered between them.

Rajmata Connects the Dots

Later that night, Rajmata sat alone with Kabir.

"You trust her," she said calmly.

Kabir didn't hesitate. "With my life."

"And yet," she continued, "you hide her."

He exhaled. "For now."

Rajmata nodded slowly. "Protection often looks like distance to the one being protected."

Kabir said nothing.

Rajmata rose. "Do not wait too long, Kabir. Truth does not like cages."

She paused, then added softly,

"And women like her do not forgive silence easily."

The Breaking Point Approaches

That night, Ishita stood at the palace balcony, cool air brushing her skin.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She stared at it.

Then answered.

"Doctor Sharma," a voice said smoothly.

"Or should I say... Mrs. Rathod?"

Her blood ran cold.

"I think we should talk," the voice continued. "About Paris. And about what your husband didn't tell you."

The call ended.

Ishita stood frozen.

Behind her, Kabir stepped onto the balcony.

"Ishita?"

She turned slowly.

Her eyes were no longer calm.

"Who is Rafael?" she asked.

Kabir's face hardened.

The moment had arrived.

Not loudly.

Not publicly.

But irreversibly.
