Chapter 22: The Enemy Who Thought He Still Had Time

Chapter 22: The Enemy Who Thought He Still Had Time

Paris did not sleep that night.

Neither did Kabir Rathod.

The city lights blurred beneath the windows of the private jet as it cut through the sky, fast and silent, carrying a man who was no longer chasing vengeance—he was enforcing an ending.

Kabir stood near the window, sleeves rolled up, jaw tight. Veer watched him from across the cabin, saying nothing. He had known his brother all his life, but this Kabir was different.

This Kabir was controlled.

Dangerously calm.

"Rafael moved again," Veer finally said, breaking the silence. "He tried contacting one of our old suppliers in Marseille. The line went dead within minutes."

Kabir didn't turn. "He's testing how close we are."

Veer nodded. "He doesn't know we're already inside his circle."

Kabir's reflection stared back at him in the glass—eyes darker than the Paris night waiting below.

"He knows," Kabir said quietly. "He just doesn't know how late it is."

Palace of Silence

Back in India, Rathod Palace was wrapped in a stillness that felt almost sacred.

Ishita woke before dawn.

Her hand instinctively went to her stomach. Still flat. Still quiet. And yet—everything had changed.

She sat up slowly, careful, her doctor's instincts now mixed with something far more fragile: motherhood.

The palace doctor had insisted on rest. Rajmata had insisted on obedience.

"You carry more than blood now," Rajmata had said. "You carry legacy."

Ishita walked to the temple wing, barefoot on cold marble, the smell of incense grounding her nerves.

She prayed—not for safety.

For Kabir.

For clarity.

For strength strong enough for two hearts.

Her phone vibrated softly.

Kabir:

Landed. Everything under control. Don't worry.

She smiled faintly.

Ishita:

I'm not worried. I'm waiting.

He didn't reply immediately.

Somewhere in Paris, Kabir read those words and closed his eyes.

Rafael's Mistake

Rafael believed in two things.

Fear.

And time.

He had built his empire on the assumption that Rathods always reacted emotionally. That Kabir Rathod fought with rage first, strategy second.

He was wrong.

The abandoned warehouse near the Seine looked harmless from the outside. Inside, it was chaos—men moving, phones ringing, weapons being packed.

Rafael paced, irritation sharp in every movement.

"They're closer," one of his men said nervously. "We should move locations."

Rafael scoffed. "Kabir Rathod doesn't move without warning. He'll come roaring, threatening—"

The lights went out.

Complete darkness.

The sound of a single footstep echoed.

Then another.

A voice followed—calm, cold, unmistakable.

"You're ten years behind your own myth, Rafael."

The emergency lights flickered on.

Kabir stood at the entrance, Veer beside him, men positioned with surgical precision.

Rafael froze.

For the first time in years, real fear crossed his face.

"You came alone," Rafael sneered weakly. "That was stupid."

Kabir smiled—but there was no warmth in it.

"I came prepared," he said. "You came delusional."

Within seconds, the warehouse was secured.

No gunshots.

No chaos.

Just efficiency.

Rafael was dragged forward, forced to his knees.

"You think killing me ends this?" Rafael spat. "You think your wife—"

Kabir moved faster than thought.

His fist connected with Rafael's jaw, sending him sprawling.

Veer stiffened. "Bhai—"

Kabir crouched down, gripping Rafael's collar, his voice terrifyingly controlled.

"You will not speak her name," he said. "Not now. Not ever."

Rafael laughed bloodily. "She's pregnant, isn't she?"

The air shifted.

Kabir's eyes went black.

Veer swore under his breath.

"How do you know?" Kabir asked softly.

Rafael's smile widened. "I know everything about you. I always have."

Kabir stood slowly.

"Then know this," he said. "You didn't lose because you were weaker."

He leaned down, voice dropping to a whisper only Rafael could hear.

"You lost because you underestimated a man who finally learned restraint."

He nodded once.

Veer signaled the authorities already waiting.

Rafael was taken away—alive, exposed, finished.

As the sirens faded, Veer looked at Kabir.

"It's done," Veer said.

Kabir didn't answer immediately.

His phone vibrated.

Ishita:

I felt restless. Are you okay?

Kabir closed his eyes.

Kabir:

It's over. I'm coming home.

Aftermath

News traveled fast—but not publicly.

Rafael's arrest was framed as an international financial crime bust. No Rathod names. No Ishita.

Rajmata ensured silence wrapped around the truth like armor.

Still, danger leaves echoes.

That night, Rajmata called Kabir via secure line.

"You ended him?" she asked.

"Yes," Kabir replied.

"Good," she said simply. "Come home."

He hesitated. "Dadi... he knew."

Rajmata's voice hardened. "Then he knows no more."

There was no fear in her tone. Only finality.

Waiting

Ishita sat on the bed, legs folded, reading the same paragraph over and over without absorbing a word.

When the palace doors finally opened hours later, she felt it before she heard it.

Kabir.

She stood instantly.

He entered the room quietly, exhaustion lining his face, suit wrinkled, eyes searching.

She ran to him.

He caught her mid-step, arms wrapping around her tightly—but carefully.

"I'm here," he murmured into her hair. "I'm safe."

She pressed her face into his chest, breathing him in.

"You scared me," she whispered.

He pulled back slightly, resting his forehead against hers.

"I won't do that again," he promised. "Not to you. Not to our child."

Her eyes softened.

"Promise me something else," she said.

"Anything."

"No more fighting alone."

Kabir nodded slowly. "Never again."

A Quiet Ending, A Loud Beginning

Later that night, Kabir lay with his head in Ishita's lap, her fingers gently threading through his hair.

The storm had passed.

But the future had arrived—uninvited, unstoppable.

Outside, the palace slept.

Inside, a family was being born.

And somewhere far away, an enemy learned the final truth:

You don't threaten a man who has finally found something to lose.
