Chapter 24: Things Left Unsaid
The Rathod Palace never truly slept.
It only lowered its voice.
Kavya Rathod stood on the far balcony of the east wing, phone pressed to her ear, eyes fixed on the darkness beyond the palace walls. The night breeze tugged at her dupatta, cool against her warm skin.
"You're late," she whispered.
A pause.
Then, softer, "I know... I know you said not to call."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"No, I'm not scared," she said quickly. "I just—this place watches everything."
Another pause.
This time, her lips curved into a smile she never wore inside the palace.
"Tomorrow?" she murmured. "No. Not tomorrow. I'll message you."
She ended the call before she could say anything else.
Before anyone could hear.
Kavya leaned against the railing, heart racing—not with fear, but with the thrill of holding something that belonged only to her.
Something no one knew.
Not Kabir.
Not Veer.
Not even Ishita.
Yet.
⸻
Inside the Palace
Ishita sat in the family lounge, legs tucked beneath her, medical reports spread neatly across the table. She wasn't reading them—not really.
Her hand rested unconsciously over her stomach.
Kabir watched her from across the room, pretending to go through emails.
"You've been quiet today," he said finally.
She looked up. "So have you."
He smiled faintly. "Occupational hazard."
She didn't smile back.
"Veer called," she said instead. "He asked if I'd be joining him for dinner tomorrow."
Kabir stiffened almost imperceptibly. "Did he say why?"
"No," she replied. "But he sounded... distracted."
Kabir knew why.
Rafi.
The name lingered in his mind like a bruise.
"Don't worry," he said calmly. "Veer will be fine."
Ishita studied his face for a long moment, then nodded. She had learned, over the years, which battles to push and which truths would come on their own.
⸻
Kavya, Again
Later that night, Kavya slipped quietly into the palace kitchen.
She poured herself water, hands trembling slightly—not from fear, but from anticipation.
"You're up late."
Kavya nearly jumped out of her skin.
Ishita stood near the doorway, arms folded loosely, eyes observant but gentle.
"Couldn't sleep," Kavya said quickly.
Ishita smiled. "Me neither."
They stood together in silence for a moment.
Then Ishita spoke, casually, "You've been smiling at your phone a lot lately."
Kavya choked on her water. "Have I?"
"Yes," Ishita replied easily. "It's... nice."
Kavya relaxed—just a little.
"It's nothing," she said.
Ishita nodded, accepting the half-truth without judgment. "Nothing always turns into something, eventually."
Their eyes met.
A silent understanding passed between them.
Ishita didn't ask more.
Kavya didn't offer more.
Trust was built like that here—slow, deliberate.
⸻
Elsewhere in the Palace
Veer stood in the gym, punching the bag harder than necessary.
Pain flared through his injured arm, but he ignored it.
"Stop," Kabir said from behind him.
Veer turned sharply. "I'm fine."
Kabir crossed his arms. "You're angry."
Veer scoffed. "I'm breathing."
Kabir didn't push further.
Brothers didn't always need explanations.
They needed space.
⸻
A Message Unsent
Back in her room, Kavya sat on her bed, phone glowing softly in her hand.
I miss you.
She typed it.
Deleted it.
Typed again.
Be careful.
She sent that instead.
A reply came almost immediately.
Always am. You?
She smiled.
Trying to be.
She turned the phone face-down before anyone could walk in.
Some secrets were safer in the dark.
⸻
Nightfall
Kabir lay beside Ishita, one arm around her, listening to her breathe.
"Kavya's hiding something," Ishita said quietly.
Kabir chuckled. "She's twenty-six. Of course she is."
"It doesn't feel reckless," Ishita murmured. "It feels... intentional."
Kabir thought of Rafi. Of Veer. Of the blood that refused to stay hidden.
"Let's hope it stays safe," he said.
Ishita nodded, closing her eyes.
In the stillness of the palace, love moved quietly—through whispered calls, unsent messages, guarded glances.
Not everything needed to be revealed yet.
Some stories were still choosing their moment.
